Life-giving Verses to Pray over Your Health or Those You Love

Last week, my body had an unexpected crash. We first thought perhaps it was a heart attack (my dad died of a heart attack at age 62), but the wise doctors in the ER soon diagnosed and successfully treated my body for another life-threatening issue.

God wrapped me in His love, power and care.

Friends and family prayed. I spent several days in ICU, then as I improved, I was moved to a recovery wing then 5 days later, released to go home. Having been mostly healthy all my life (3 c-sections and a hysterectomy are the only reasons I have been in hospital in the past). I am usually on the “Pastor’s wife/Director of Women’s Ministry” side of VISITING others in the hospital.  Being a patient was a new experience, so I leaned on spiritual principles I have built my life on, for example:

In the hospital, I listened to praise music, determined to “worship my way to wellness”

Once I was home, I had just enough energy to ask my friends on email and social media for prayer, and I asked them to send verses from God’s Word to encourage me. These are a few of my favorite verses that have bolstered me. Please pray them for me, then print this blog and keep in a handy place (like your bible) for the next time you want to send an encouraging verse to someone you love or if you are in a health crisis and want to equip others to pray for you.

I noticed most are from the Old Testament, I believe part of he reason is some of the authors of these OT books are very honest, real and transparent. One note about leaning on an OT verse is these were written to Israel, HOWEVER, the same God who carried Israel, carries us even today.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Heb 13:8)  and “For I the Lord do not change.” (Mal 3:6)

This first verse, I was praying about how grateful and thankful I was to be alive so I did a search on words like “alive” and “death”  and this one rose to the surface. I took it mean

God is not finished with me yet as I will “walk before God in the light of the living” .

As you read through these, which is most inspiring to you?  Which would God like you to deliver to another in a greeting card, with a gift, through a text, email or on social media?

For You delivered me from death, even my feet from stumbling, to walk before God in the light of life. (Psalm 56:13 HCSB)

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Is 41:10 ESV)

My flesh and my heart may fail,  but God is the strength of my heart  and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:26NIV)

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. (Is 46:4 NIV)

Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. (Is 58:8 ESV)

But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.” (Mal 4:2 NLT)

“The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zeph 3:17 NKJV)

“The LORD sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health. ” (Psalm 41:3ESV)

Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper and enjoy good health, as your soul also prospers.” (3 John 1:2 BSB)

“He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death. ” (Psalm 107:20 NLT)

“but those who hope in the Lord  will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;  they will run and not grow weary,  they will walk and not be faint. “(Is 40:31 NIV)

“For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.” (2 Cor 1:5 NLT)

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—
in God I trust and am not afraid.   What can mere mortals do to me? “(Psalm 56:3-4 NIV)

“Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.” (Psalm 71:18 NIV)

But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive!” (Psalm 54:4 NLT)
